MOTS-c

Compound Overview

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a naturally occurring 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S ribosomal RNA region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Unlike most biologically active peptides encoded by the nuclear genome, MOTS-c originates from the mitochondrial genome, making it an important research target in the emerging field of mitochondrial signaling and mitochondrial-nuclear communication (mitonuclear signaling).

Researchers have extensively investigated MOTS-c for its role in cellular energy metabolism, metabolic homeostasis, stress adaptation, and mitochondrial signaling pathways. Experimental studies suggest that MOTS-c may influence intracellular metabolic regulation through interactions with pathways such as AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and other nutrient-sensing mechanisms involved in cellular bioenergetics and metabolic adaptation.

As an investigational peptide, MOTS-c serves as a valuable laboratory tool for studying mitochondrial biology, cellular metabolism, endocrine physiology, molecular signaling, and structure-activity relationships. Ongoing research continues to explore its biochemical properties and mechanisms of action in controlled experimental models.

Laboratory Handling

Store refrigerated immediately upon receipt to preserve peptide stability. For extended laboratory storage, freezing at −20°C or below is recommended. Protect the lyophilized peptide from moisture, excessive heat, and direct light. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles following reconstitution, as these may reduce peptide stability and biological integrity. Allow the vial to equilibrate to room temperature before opening to minimize condensation, and always use sterile laboratory equipment together with appropriate aseptic laboratory techniques. This product is intended for use only by qualified research personnel operating in controlled laboratory environments.
